The Thermapen NANO is the next generation of one of the best-known instant-read cooking thermometers around.
It takes the formula behind the Thermapen ONE and adds faster readings, built-in magnetic storage, a brighter display and a slimmer, lighter body.
But new doesn't automatically mean that everyone needs the new one.
The Thermapen ONE already delivers one-second readings, ±0.3°C accuracy and the kind of reliability that has made it a benchmark cooking thermometer.
So what's actually changed, who benefits from those changes and which model makes the most sense for the way you cook?
NANO moves Thermapen forward. ONE is still a seriously good thermometer.
On specification alone, the NANO is the more advanced model. It reads faster, adds magnetic storage, improves the display and comes in a smaller package.
What it doesn't do is make the Thermapen ONE suddenly slow, inaccurate or outdated.
Thermapen NANO vs Thermapen ONE: At a Glance
The NANO isn't a completely different thermometer. It's an evolution of the ONE, retaining its core strengths while improving several areas.

What's Actually Changed?
The specification sheet gives us plenty of numbers, but some changes matter much more than others once food hits the grill.
Thermapen's biggest headline. NANO reduces the approximate reading time from one second to 0.4 seconds.
NANO can attach to suitable magnetic surfaces around your cooking area, making it easier to keep close at hand.
A useful improvement for evening BBQs, winter cooks and poorly lit outdoor kitchens.
Potentially useful if your thermometer spends most of its life in an apron, BBQ bag or competition kit.
Does 0.4 seconds actually matter?
It depends entirely on what you're cooking.
If you're checking one roast chicken, the difference between a 0.4-second reading and a one-second reading isn't going to change your life.
But speed becomes much more useful when checking lots of pieces of food.
A grill full of chicken thighs, burgers, steaks or wings shouldn't be judged from one temperature reading.
The quicker each reading appears, the easier it becomes to check several pieces and identify hotter or cooler areas of the grill.
The advantage isn't saving 0.6 seconds once. It's saving that time repeatedly when you're checking several pieces of food.
Is NANO more accurate than Thermapen ONE?
No meaningful difference here.
Both are specified at approximately ±0.3°C accuracy across their normal cooking range.
And that's worth remembering.
NANO's improvement isn't that ONE suddenly gives poor temperature readings. The new model is about getting an already accurate reading faster and making the thermometer more convenient to use.
The built-in magnet may be more useful than it sounds
This could turn out to be one of NANO's best everyday improvements.
A thermometer only helps if you can find it when you need it.
Being able to keep NANO attached to a suitable metal surface close to your cooking station should make it easier to grab, probe and get back to cooking.
Just make sure you don't leave it attached to anything that becomes excessively hot.
The brighter display makes sense outside
A brighter screen sounds like a minor upgrade until you're cooking outside after dark.
Evening BBQs, autumn cooks, overnight briskets and dark winter evenings are exactly where improved visibility starts becoming genuinely useful.
Thermapen NANO vs ONE for BBQ
Both are extremely well suited to BBQ.
They're instant-read thermometers rather than leave-in probes, so their job is to tell you what's happening inside the food when you need to make a decision.
That might mean checking whether chicken is safely cooked, finding the coolest part of a steak or probing several burgers across a grill.
Steak
NANO's faster reading should be useful when checking several steaks or probing different areas of a thick cut.
For a single steak, though, ONE's one-second reading is already extremely fast.
Chicken wings and thighs
This is where extra speed starts making more sense.
Rather than checking one wing or thigh and assuming everything else has cooked equally, you can work quickly through several pieces.
Burgers and sausages
Again, repetitive checking favours speed.
If you're cooking for a crowd, faster readings make it easier to check multiple pieces without holding up service.
Brisket and pulled pork
The raw speed difference is less important here.
You're more likely to be probing several areas to understand temperature and tenderness rather than trying to save fractions of a second.
Both thermometers are more than capable of doing that job.
Which Thermapen Is Right for You?
You want Thermapen's fastest current instant-read performance and value the magnet, brighter display and smaller body.
You want proven premium performance and one-second readings are already more than fast enough for the way you cook.
You already own one and it's working perfectly. Nothing about the NANO launch changes what ONE can already do.
Should Thermapen ONE owners upgrade?
For most people, we don't think there's any need to rush.
ONE remains extremely fast, accurate, waterproof and easy to use.
NANO is more interesting as an upgrade if you regularly check lots of food at once, particularly value magnetic storage or simply want Thermapen's latest design.
Otherwise, keep using the thermometer you've already got.
What if you're buying your first Thermapen?
This is where price and use case become important.
NANO has the more advanced specification.
ONE still delivers the fundamentals exceptionally well.
Once NANO's full UK pricing and availability are established, we'll be able to compare the two properly on value as well as features.
Our Verdict: Evolution, Not Obsolescence
The NANO looks like exactly what we'd expect from a next-generation Thermapen.
It's faster. It's slimmer. It's easier to store. And several of those changes should be genuinely useful around a BBQ.
But the most important thing to remember is that NANO improves the Thermapen formula rather than fixing a bad thermometer.
Thermapen ONE already reads temperatures in around one second with ±0.3°C accuracy.
That's still extremely good.
For new buyers, NANO gives another option at the premium end of the market.
For existing ONE owners, the question isn't whether NANO is better on paper. It is.
The question is whether those improvements make enough difference to the way you cook to justify changing.
That's something we'll be in a much better position to answer once we've cooked with the NANO ourselves.
Thermapen NANO vs ONE FAQs
Is the Thermapen NANO replacing the Thermapen ONE?
Thermapen describes NANO as the next generation following the Thermapen ONE. ONE remains a highly capable instant-read thermometer regardless of the introduction of the newer model.
How much faster is the Thermapen NANO?
Thermapen states that NANO produces readings in approximately 0.4 seconds, compared with approximately one second for Thermapen ONE.
Is Thermapen NANO more accurate than ONE?
No meaningful difference is stated. Both are rated at approximately ±0.3°C accuracy across their primary cooking range.
Does Thermapen NANO have a magnet?
Yes. A built-in magnet is one of NANO's new features, allowing it to attach to suitable magnetic surfaces.
Is Thermapen NANO waterproof?
Yes. NANO carries an IP67 waterproof rating, as does Thermapen ONE.
Is Thermapen NANO good for BBQ?
Its fast readings, waterproof construction, rotating display and broad temperature range make it very well suited to BBQ on paper. We'll update this guide once we've tested one in real cooking conditions.
Is Thermapen ONE still worth buying?
Yes. ONE still provides approximately one-second readings, ±0.3°C accuracy, waterproof construction and a five-year guarantee. The NANO introduces improvements but doesn't change the performance ONE already offers.
Should I upgrade from Thermapen ONE to NANO?
Probably not simply because a new version exists. NANO may be worth considering if its faster readings, magnet, brighter display or smaller design solve something you genuinely want to improve.
Which is better, Thermapen NANO or ONE?
NANO has the more advanced specification, while ONE remains an excellent premium instant-read thermometer. Which represents the better choice depends on price, availability and which features actually matter to you.
